Eligibility for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment changes from 1 July 2025

The page provides an update of Medicare eligibility arrangements for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment from 1 July 2025 as well as answers to frequently asked questions about these changes.

From 1 July 2025, MRI equipment-based licences with the Commonwealth will be replaced by practice-based licences. All partial and ineligible MRIs at the practices with an existing licence will become fully Medicare-eligible.

From 1 July 2027, the requirement for MRI equipment to have a licence with the Commonwealth would be removed. Existing and new MRIs would become fully Medicare-eligible.
